The Role of Design in Translational Research

Written by Luke Sy on 4th Nov. 2020

In the webinar, Robert Tiller, CEO of Tiller Design gave a brief description on the role of design in translation research. Translational research is the gap between research (university, R&D laboratories) and product development (Industry). The design team can play the following roles in bridging the said gap.

Understanding users and patients needs

Human factor engineering needs clinical input. Correct environment is critical for successful design and regulatory approval.

Bridging knowledge gap

In the journey towards good design, the knowledge gap between researchers and the new company is brought to light. Addressing the gap will help reduce business risks, specially at proof of concept stage (e.g., clinical trials) where business risk is highest. Normally, technical knowledge is transferred from research to the new company, strengthening the new company’s technical team. Researchers will also love to stick around due to potential source of novelty.

Overall, good design leads to the achievement of commercial goals, positive patient/user experience, and novel research outcomes.
